Rosa doesn’t look quite like anyone else—her head is shaped like a square. Tired of constant staring and teasing, she runs away, hating the fact that she looks so different. One day, a mysterious voice leads her to a magical pool where she discovers her sparkling diamond heart, her inner beauty. When Rosa returns every day, she is rewarded with courage, confidence, and compassion. Ultimately she discovers that no matter how we look on the outside, we each have a diamond heart on the inside.

A finalist for Foreword Magazine’s 2002 Best Children’s Book of the Year Award, Little Squarehead reminds us that our beauty is defined by our uniqueness and that what really counts is what’s inside of us. Peggy O’Neill has created an empowering message of self-acceptance that will remain with readers for a lifetime. Denise Freeman’s illustrations are flooded with hidden creatures, perfectly completing this celebration of diversity and individuality.
