The commanding song of an ancient Douglas fir tree celebrates the cycle of life in the Olympic Rainforest of the Pacific Northwest, invoking the sacredness and wonder of nature. But when human development threatens this tranquility, the fir wonders, “Who will house the owl? And who will hold the river’s shore? Who will take refuge in my shadow, if my shadow falls no more?”

Dana Lyons’ moving poem is stunningly illustrated by art instructor David Danioth. Summoning a greater respect for the environment and awareness of our interconnectedness, The Tree holds each of us responsible for the well being of our planet.

Including supplementary educational information about the rainforest, this powerful picture book highlights the urgent need to preserve and protect our ecosystems.

The Tree won Skipping Stones Magazine’s award for Best Ecology Book and was a finalist for both the ASPCA Children’s Book Award and ForeWord Magazine’s Best Environmental Book Award. This inspiring picture book also received a Certificate of Merit from the National Arbor Day Foundation and was named Best Children’s Book at the Green Book Festival.
