Natsama is enthralled when his grandmother tells him about the mystical dreambird, whose wings reach from the sun to the moon. Determined to find a dreambird and claim its mysterious gift, the young Native American boy devotes himself to becoming the greatest hunter and fisherman in his tribe. But as his skills grow, so too does his ego.

When he reaches sixteen, the confident young warrior begins his quest, expecting a swift success. But months pass and, despite all his efforts, the mysterious bird continues to elude him. Only after seeking his grandmother’s guidance does Natsama learn the value of humility, patience, and persistence. In reaching out to save another in distress, he discovers what he has been seeking all along—his true self.

David Ogden’s coming of age tale won the 1998 Coalition of Visionary Resources Award for Best Children’s Book. Inspired by renowned illustrator Jody Bergsma’s travels throughout the Pacific Northwest, Dreambirds paints a stunning picture of this region and the Native American tribes who call it home.
