Meet Tyler, a young boy of mixed race who questions the use of skin color as a label and form of identity. Realizing that people of all colors sing, dance, dream, feel, and love, he declares, “I am a human being, not a color, not a word. I have my hopes and dreams, and a voice that will be heard.”

Written by mother-daughter duo Heidi Cole and Nancy Vogl, Am I a Color Too? was inspired by Cole’s son Tyler’s experiences growing up as an interracial child. Gerald Purnell’s masterful illustrations bring this tale of unity and equality brilliantly to life. Children of all races will see a child who looks like them within the pages of this heartwarming picture book.

Among its many accolades, Am I a Color Too? received the Benjamin Franklin Award for Best Multicultural Book, the Christopher Award for Best Book for Young People, and the Wanda Gag Award for Outstanding Read-Aloud Book.
