Roonie B. Moonie: Lost and Alone
The Vision
“In a panic, Roonie dropped his favorite flashlight and didn't stop buzzing his little wings until he was safely out of the dark, scary log.”
This story vividly portrays the immediate fear and subsequent resourcefulness required when a child faces the unknown alone. It validates the importance of parental guidance while celebrating a child's ability to self-regulate under pressure.
Therapeutic Guide
Core Utility: Teaches children the value of listening to their 'gut feeling' (intuition) as a primary safety mechanism.
Conversation Starters:
- What did Roonie do when he felt scared inside the dark log?
- How did Roonie know the bird wasn't a safe stranger, even though it offered help?
- What are three tools (like Roonie's flashlight) you keep in your 'explorer backpack' for tricky situations?

Janan (Koutny) Cain grew up in Darien, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. Janan started out as a graphic designer in 1982 doing keyline and paste-up. In 1993, Janan had her first daughter, Emily, and stopped working full-time. Around the time her second daughter, Isabella, was two years old, Janan wanted to teach them words for their emotions but couldn’t find any good books for young children dealing with that topic. Being an illustrator, she decided to create her own book and the idea for The Way I Feel was born.
